Alpha is also known as a measure of outperformance because it represents the difference between what an asset returns and what its benchmark returns. A positive alpha of 1.0 indicates that the fund exceeded the benchmark index by 1%. A comparable negative alpha of 1.0 would suggest a 1% underperformance.
